A retainer secures our services and is paid before mediation begins. The amount is set based on the estimated scope and discussed during your initial consultation. Any unused portion is refunded promptly upon conclusion.
Every hour billed is spent moving your matter forward.
The $350 hourly rate covers all time Jana spends on your file — intake calls, reviewing documents you send in advance, drafting the Agreement to Mediate, running the mediation sessions themselves, and preparing the final Memorandum of Understanding or Minutes of Settlement. Because Jana is both a family lawyer and an accredited mediator, you aren't paying two professionals for legal context and mediation expertise — you get both in a single hourly rate.

What to budget for
Most mediations resolve in one to three sessions. A typical straightforward matter runs three to six billable hours end to end. More complex matters — those involving corporate assets, pensions, or extensive parenting arrangements — may need additional time. You'll receive an estimate after your intake so you can plan with confidence, and the retainer is topped up or refunded to reflect actual time spent.
